Milwaukee's Missing Black Gay Bars: A Community's Call for Connection

When Michael Anderson returned to Milwaukee from Atlanta, he was struck by the city's evolution. While the Third Ward buzzed with new energy, a different kind of change had taken hold on the North Side: the disappearance of black gay bars and clubs.

Once, establishments like Sisters offered a vital space for the community.

The Ring and Richards also closed their doors. Now, Anderson and others feel the absence of dedicated spaces where black gay individuals can gather, socialize, and find camaraderie - places to play cards, shoot pool, and simply be themselves.

"Black gay guys need their own bar," Anderson emphasizes.

Anderson, a leather artist and owner of MM Leather Studio, moved back to Milwaukee after his father's stroke.

His artistic creations, ranging from leather harnesses to high-end accessories, are making their mark on the city. He sells his work at street festivals and the Third Ward's urban market.

Exploring Milwaukee's LGBTQ+ Scene

While dedicated black gay bars may be missing, Milwaukee's LGBTQ+ scene remains vibrant and diverse. Here's a glimpse of what the city has to offer:

  • Landmark: This casual bar attracts a mixed crowd of black and white patrons.
  • Kruz: Known for its friendly bartenders, cocktails, and relaxing patio.
  • La Cage: A must-visit for drag performances featuring emerging local talent.
  • POP: A lively bar and restaurant with a fun, colorful atmosphere, offering drinks, delicious bites, DJ nights, and dance parties.
  • Walker's Pint: A welcoming bar with a strong beer list and a friendly atmosphere.

Beyond the Usual Spots

Milwaukee's LGBTQ+ scene extends beyond the bars.

Other notable venues include:

  • Woody's
  • Harbor Room
  • Fluid
  • Sabbatic

The search for community and connection continues. While Milwaukee offers various LGBTQ+ spaces, the need for dedicated black gay bars remains, highlighting the importance of inclusive spaces that cater to specific community needs and provide a sense of belonging.
